Another USDA proposal putting animals at risk

The USDA wants to allow private inspectors to enforce critical animal welfare laws

Dear Friend,

the United States Department of Agriculture is considering using the results of private inspections when determining the frequency of federal inspections needed to ensure compliance with the Animal Welfare Act. This would affect USDA-regulated facilities, including thousands of puppy mills, wildlife exhibitors, and research labs.

But this isn’t the first action proposed by USDA that could be detrimental to animals, as you well know. We need your support to make sure we can continue to fight these dangerous proposals and continue to advocate for critical animal welfare policies.

Nearly 250k Sign Care2 Petition Asking World Cup Sponsors to Pressure Russia to Stop Killing Stray Dogs

Care2 Petition Asks World Cup Sponsors to Pressure Russia to Stop Killing Stray Dogs

The Care2 petition is asking Russia to implement a spay/neuter program — and asking major World Cup sponsors to keep the pressure up, too.

RUSSIA — Nearly 250,000 Care2 members are pressuring Russian officials and World Cup sponsors to ensure stray dogs are spayed and neutered, not killed, ahead of this summer’s event. The petition was launched after reports Russia devoted $1.9 million to host cities to deploy ‘canine KGB’ death squads.

After widespread outrage erupted, Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Mutko told World Cup host cities to place dogs in temporary shelters instead of killing them, but Care2 members want to ensure the killings don’t continue.

“Placing Russia’s stray dogs in shelters is a good first step, but nearly 250,000 Care2 members believe officials should also implement a spay/neuter program to ensure unethical killing is never implemented again — and that World Cup sponsors have a moral responsibility to pressure Russia for humane solutions as well,” Care2 President and CEO Randy Paynter said in a statement.

The Care2 petition also urges major brands that are sponsoring the World Cup, including Coca-Cola, Visa and Adidas, to urge Russian officials to choose humane solutions.

“Influential World Cup sponsors like Coca-Cola, Visa and Adidas should also put pressure on Russian officials not to kill strays,” the Care2 petition reads.

Russia’s parliamentary newspaper reported this month that roughly two million stray animals are roaming World Cup cities. Last month, Vladimir Burmatov, head of the environmental protection committee, sent a letter to sport minister Pavel Kolobkov urging him to find a human solution for strays.

This isn’t the first time Russia has planned to kill strays ahead of a major international event. A popular Care2 petition ( www.thepetitionsite.com/de/972… ) gathered over 173,000 signatures in 2014, asking Russia to halt its plan to kill 2,000 stray dogs ahead of the Winter Olympics. The petition was considered successful when Russia agreed to send the dogs to shelters. But with so many more dogs’ lives at stake this time around, the Care2 petition asks Russia to spay and neuter to ensure the problem doesn’t happen again.
