A formal diplomatic protest, known as a démarche, was yesterday delivered to the Icelandic Government Offices in Reykjavík.

The EU, its 28 member states and the governments of the United States, Australia, Brazil, Israel, Mexico, Monaco and New-Zealand, declared their “strong opposition” to commercial whaling in Iceland, in particular the hunting of fin whales and the subsequent trading of fin whale products, urging Iceland to “respect the IWC’s global moratorium and end its commercial whaling and international trade in whale products.” …

Japan seeks to restart ‘scientific whaling’ program amidst international backlash

Australia and New Zealand lead efforts to enforce an earlier court ruling that found Japan’s whaling program to be more commercial than scientific.

Despite a ruling earlier this year by the International Court of Justice that found Japan’s whaling program in the Antarctic to be “illegal” ( www.mnn.com/earth-matters/anim… ), officials there are once again attempting to resume hunting under a “scientific research” smokescreen. News of Japan’s plans comes as the International Whaling Commission is having its first general session in more than two years – with representatives from 68 of the 88 signatories gathering for the four-day event …
