Whale meat cargo ship arrives in Japan via new Arctic route to avoid protesters

A cargo ship carrying 1,816 tons of whale meat from Iceland arrived in Japan’s Osaka port via the Arctic Ocean for the first time Sunday, after changing its conventional sea route via the Indian Ocean to avoid obstruction by anti-whaling groups.

The ship, under the flag of St. Kitts and Nevis, brought whale meat equivalent to around 40 percent of Japan’s annual consumption. It triggered opposition from Greenpeace Japan, which said the whale meat amounted to 137 fin whales caught in Iceland last year …
