PETA Calls for Federal Criminal Investigation After New Report Reveals Workers at JBS Grand Island Hung a Conscious Cow Upside Down.

Grand Island, Neb. – PETA has obtained a recent U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) report revealing at least the fifth violation of federal law in two years at JBS Grand Island slaughterhouse. In response, PETA sent a letter ( www.peta.org/wp-content/upload… ) today calling on the U.S. attorney for the District of Nebraska to investigate the slaughterhouse for its persistent violations of the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act and, as appropriate, file federal criminal charges against the facility and the workers responsible for the animals’ suffering. …

No Standing for Monkey to Bring Selfie Copyright Suit

Ninth Circuit Judges Carlos Bea and N. Randy Smith said an en banc panel of the court ought to reconsider whether animals ever have standing to bring claims.People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals may be sorry it ever brought Naruto v. Slater, the “monkey selfie” copyright case.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit ruled Monday ( images.law.com/contrib/content… ) that monkeys don’t have standing under the Copyright Act to bring such a case, even with PETA acting as “next friend.” In fact, a concurring judge argued that animals should never have standing to bring any case, and majority author Judge Carlos Bea suggested the Ninth Circuit should reconsider that issue en banc. …
