On September 11th, a joint motion to dismiss an appeal and vacate a previous judgment ( arstechnica.com/wp-content/upl… ) was entered into the Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit ( www.ca9.uscourts.gov/ ), which ended a copyright case ongoing between a British photograph and a monkey. The settlement ends a two-year case filed on behalf of the primate over selfie photos taken by that animal using the photographer’s equipment. …

Hendrix Genetics proud partner of innovative layer farm concept
On September 15, the first innovative Kipster layer farm was officially opened. Hendrix Genetics is supporter and proud partner of this concept. The first flock of 24,000 Dekalb White laying hens will populate the Kipster farm later this week. The farm has been designed using many innovative solutions. The eggs will be sold directly to Lidl supermarkets, alongside the meat of the male chicks.
The Kipster farm concept is the initiative of four Dutch entrepreneurs combining expertise in poultry, sustainability, farming and communication. The farm design has taken four years of development. Numerous parties like animal welfare and sustainability organizations have been involved in the design phase. The final result is a future proof, flexible and scalable layer farm concept.
Innovative solutions
The Kipster layer farm accommodates the natural behavior of the laying hens the best way possible. The farm roof carries 1,100 solar panels to generate a positive energy balance. Fuel emissions are limited to an absolute minimum using energy systems not used in agriculture before. Newly developed feed is used made from surplus foodstuffs to minimize the environmental impact and reduce food waste. Besides housing laying hens, Kipster welcomes visitors and aims to be a center for education and information.
Perfect fit
Dekalb White laying hens have been carefully selected for this farm concept and are an essential part of its future success. With the performance of the Dekalb White laying hens it is possible to combine animal welfare and environmental aspects in a financially sustainable way.
Frans van Sambeek, Director R&D Layers at Hendrix Genetics is very enthusiastic about the concept and stated: “As Hendrix Genetics we breed laying hens in a balanced way that produce top quality eggs. We select for stronger and happier chickens with a prolonged life. This gives our partners like Kipster and Lidl a more sustainable production system in total.”
