UPDATE: Hurricane Irma’s aftermath

Animals the forgotten victims?

Dear Friend of the animals,

This update is difficult news to share with you, but, as an animal lover, I thought you should know how Hurricane Irma is affecting animals.

This report has come from our partner organization in Barbuda:

“Barbuda was completely destroyed. All the people were evacuated to Antigua and the animals are alone. There are dead animals everywhere and the smell is overpowering. I saw dogs and pigs starting to act feral and threaten other animals.”

Over the past week, Hurricane Irma battered the Caribbean nations and Florida. The Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda has estimated more than 95% of the island’s structures have been damaged or destroyed.

As you can imagine, during this chaos, animals are the forgotten victims.

Thousands of dogs, cats, cows, pigs, sheep and goats have been killed. Those who managed to survive are suffering shock and serious injuries from flying debris. They face illnesses brought on by drinking water, and exposure to disease, parasites and starvation.

If we don’t act fast, even more animals will succumb to injuries, disease and starvation. That is why I am asking for your help today.
