Eyewitness video shows dogs suffering in laboratory

PETA ( www.femalefirst.co.uk/peta/ ) is in possession of some eyewitness footage, which was shot inside a veterinary school in Europe. Dogs are supposedly bred here, specifically to develop muscle deterioration and weakness, which is crippling and painful for the animals.

As muscular dystrophy (MD) – including a particularly aggressive form called Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) – takes over their bodies, they struggle to walk, swallow, and even breathe.

PETA has called for a French charity to stop funding experiments on animals and rather support research projects that don’t use animals.

The group has asked that the veterinary school switch to humane research methods. The eyewitness video was given to PETA by the French animal rights group Animal Testing. …

Complaint alleges animal cruelty, ‘highly unusual’ amount of deaths at Marineland

By Liam Casey

Park denies allegations, says it plans to “vigorously defend” itself

A complaint that led Ontario’s animal welfare agency to investigate Marineland accuses the tourist attraction of cruelty against several species, alleging there was a “highly unusual” amount of land animal deaths for a zoo, several deer that didn’t get proper medical care, sick bears and a peacock with a growth near its eye, The Canadian Press has learned.

The Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals laid five animal cruelty charges, relating to alleged cruelty against its black bears, guinea hens and a peacock, against the Niagara Falls, Ont., theme park on Nov. 25. The agency said its investigation is ongoing and further charges are pending.

Marineland denies the allegations in the complaint and says it plans to “vigorously defend” itself against the OSPCA charges. A court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 26.

None of the allegations or charges have been proven in court.

The complaint by an animal rights group that both Marineland and an OSPCA source say spurred the inspection alleges other species, such as red and fallow deer, are also mistreated and dying in abnormal numbers. …

Environment: Hero for Animals or Eco-Terrorist? One Man’s Lifelong Mission to Be a Voice for the Wild (Video)

From sinking whaling ships to rescuing minks from fur farms, Rod Coronado has devoted his life to protecting wildlife.

By Brian Whitney / AlterNet

Depending on who you talk to, Rod Coronado is either a true American revolutionary or one of the world’s most infamous eco-terrorists. Coronado, a member of the Pascua Yaqui tribe, has dedicated his life to being “a voice for the wild” by sabotaging commercial enterprises such as whaling ships and fur farms, and the universities that support their work. While this choice may have benefited the causes Coronado champions, he has also endured more than six years in prison, convicted ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rod_Coro… ) of what the government calls crimes of conspiracy and sabotage. He calls it “direct action.”

A free man again, Coronado is now the leader of Wolf Patrol ( wolfpatrol.org/ ), an organization that supports recovery of gray wolves in the lower 48 states. While his methods now tend to fall on the legal side of things, to say Coronado has mellowed would be incorrect. I sat down with Coronado to discuss his past direct actions, the demonization of wolves and what people can do to help wild animals. …
