REYKJAVIK: Activist hackers from the Anonymous collective have claimed responsibility for bringing down five government websites in Iceland in a protest against whale-hunting by the North Atlantic nation.

NZ urges Japan to halt whaling plans

The New Zealand government may have to physically stop Japan’s ships if it wants to prevent the country from whaling in the Southern Ocean, a conservation group says.

The New Zealand Government is considering what pressure it can apply to Japan to get it to reverse a decision to resume whaling in the Southern Ocean ( www.radionz.co.nz/news/world/2… ).

The International Court of Justice ruled last year that Japan should stop its scientific research programme, and the country’s fisheries agency subsequently cancelled most of its whaling for the 2014-15 season …

Pet Tales: PETA battles deer park over bears

By Linda Wilson Fuoco / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Pymatuning Deer Park in Mercer County is “hell for animals,” especially two black bears, according to a campaign on the website of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

More than 73,000 people have “signed” the online PETA petition that has this headline: “Urge Pennsylvania Roadside Zoo to Retire Bears to a Reputable Sanctuary.”

Undoubtedly, most who added their names have never seen this facility, which is about 94 miles north of Pittsburgh. However, federal officials who inspected the facility July 20, Aug. 27 and Nov. 2 found multiple problems that are violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act. Their reports can be found on the website of the U.S. Department of Agriculture — Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service ( www.aphis.usda.gov ).

PETA doesn’t like zoos at all. “Animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, use for entertainment or abuse in any other way,” it states right at the top of its website, www.peta.org
