Anti-poaching joint task forces set up in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: Wildlife conservation in Sabah gained critical momentum against wildlife crimes in November with the successful prosecution of a wildlife trader who was sentenced with the highest fine of RM50,000 or 12 months’ jail in default.

In the landmark ruling by Sessions Court Judge Ainul Shahrin Mohamad, 24-year old Muhd Rizduan Ibrahim was found guilty of possessing a Sunda Clouded Leopard (Neofelis diardi), a species listed as a Totally Protected Species in Sabah’s Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997. He was arrested after a long undercover stint by Sabah Wildlife Department to track and monitor his trading activities, many of which were suspected to be carried on online social networks …

Australia ‘disappointed’ at Japan whaling: Turnbull

TOKYO–Australia is “very disappointed” at Tokyo’s decision to resume whaling in the Antarctic Ocean, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said Friday as he readied for talks with Japanese premier Shinzo Abe.

The whaling fleet set sail this month for the Antarctic after a one-year pause, sparking a formal protest from 33 countries led by Australia and New Zealand.
