A necessary harvest: it’s time to allow Japan to kill whales

Last week Japan’s whaling fleet set sail for Antarctica again under its new scientific whaling program NEWREP-A. In 2014 the International Court of Justice decided ( www.icj-cij.org/docket/index.p… ) that Japan’s previous program was not scientific.

But this year Japan renounced ( www.icj-cij.org/jurisdiction/i… ) its recognition of the court’s jurisdiction on whales, effectively ruling out further legal challenges ( theconversation.com/japans-wha… ) …

Predictably, the Australian government ( www.news.com.au/national/break… ) and NGOs ( www.abc.net.au/pm/content/2015… ) have been quick to condemn the move …
